Ziplining in Costa Rica

Today’s kid’s corner guest post is courtesy of my 10 year old daughter, professional mommy lover, expert pillow puffer, and the best travel companion ever…

A couple of years ago, we went on a family vacation to Costa Rica to celebrate my grandparent’s 50th wedding anniversary. I was looking forward to spending time with my cousins, who live in Florida, but I was also really excited to see Costa Rica. Before we went, I spent time reading about the country and came up with a list of things I wanted to do and see in Costa Rica. These were:

  1. See a quetzal (a tropical bird found in Costa Rica)
  2. See a real rainforest
  3. Go ziplining

While I didn’t see a quetzal, we did see crocodiles, howler monkeys, and cute little capuchin monkeys. And, since we went in February, Costa Rica was in its Gold Season, so it wasn’t quite the green rainforest that I expected, but it was still beautiful.

Best of all, I got to go ziplining!

My mom says pin this for later!

I had never been zip lining before, so I was super excited to go. I was pretty nervous to go on the first line, but I soon realized I didn’t need to be nervous, because as I zipped off with the guide, I felt a sensation of exhilaration come over me. It still felt like I left my stomach behind on the first platform though. But before I knew it, we were unclipped, and safe on the second platform.

For the most part, I went with a guide, but for a couple of the shorter lines, I went alone. When I was alone, it felt like I could enjoy the zipping more, and it also felt like I had more time to take in the lush landscape. The air was warm, humid, and damp; and, as my toddler self would say, it smelled like Florida. I didn’t really see much other than trees, flowers, and the occasional bird, but I still enjoyed getting to see the forest in person.

I can’t wait until I’m bigger and I can do them all on my own

As we climbed between the platforms, I heard so many birds, I wondered how they could tell each other apart. I really wanted to see a quetzal, a well-known Costa Rican bird. But the beautiful (or so I’ve heard) bird refused to show itself.

Altogether we went on 11 zip lines and I was usually the first one off the platform. After arriving at each stop, I watched family members arriving. Some were screaming, but I’m not going to point any fingers. Though if you know my family well, I think you can guess. 🙂 After a few minutes I would be clipped on to the next line, and off I’d go. On the last line I went alone, and I really had time to take in the scenery.

The trees were tall, and the sun filtered through the branches, illuminating the jungle. I would occasionally catch a fleeting glimpse of a bird, and always hear their incessant chattering. After landing on the arrival pad, I unclipped and waited for the last of my cousins, aunts, and uncles to trickle in. I was loath to leave, but, after some pestering, I agreed to not go around again. But nobody could deny this was an amazingly fun experience and I can’t wait to do it again.

It was so fun to go ziplining with my family!

Have you been ziplining? If so, did you like it? If not, would you want to go?
